The Meaning of Lent
Lent is a time of preparation to celebrate the Resurrection of Christ. The 40-day length of Lent comes from the Bible, where 40 days is a time of testing, trial, penance, purification, and renewal. It begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Thursday.
Practices- Fasting: Abstaining from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all Fridays of Lent. Some also avoid alcohol, sweets, and fast foods.
- Almsgiving: Giving money or food to the poor, or performing other acts of charity.
- Prayer: Saying special Lenten prayers.
- Spiritual challenges: Joining other Catholics for a spiritual challenge.
- Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation: Participating in this sacrament.
